Our Story

Michael Cheek of Palm Bay FL came across a cemetery two weeks before Christmas, 2018 and was drawn to a back area that was completely overgrown by fallen trees and vines....Michael saw the outline of a headstone in all the trash & rubble, he doggedly torn back the vines and shattered tree limbs to find two headstones, Michael using his bare hands cleaned off the headstones to reveal that they were in fact two military men buried side by side...Forgotten and abandoned by everyone...Michael brought his wife Ardell back to the Shady Oaks Cemetery after picking up a flag pole along with wreaths and many American flags for the twenty eight other

veterans they discovered. The old flag pole had rusted away many years ago and Michael & Ardell erected a twenty foot high flag pole to proudly fly Old Glory!!  You can drive by and see it proudly waving today!  They placed a wreath and flags at the two Army graves along with the thirty three other military graves.  Michael comes from a long line of service men and women in his family, every brother & sister and Michael's father proudly served our Country....Michael was saddened and then outraged by the lack of care that these men received.  Michael told Bruce Rothschild about what was going on and Bruce contacted the local Spectrum Channel 13 and Fox 35 News!  As of March 1, 2020, we have removed over twenty tons of trash from both J N Tucker Memorial Cemetery and the J S Stone Cemetery!  Thank you to all our incredible Volunteers! Our Incredible Corporate Partners... Keep Brevard Beautiful...Northrup Grumann & Team RubiconUSA...American Legion Post 163 & 191...Thank you ALL!

This just in!!!!  Abigail Wright Chamberlin DAR Chapter just awarded both Michael & Bruce with the DAR Medal of Honor!!

Also Channel 6 News is highlighting Michael Cheek for his incredible Citizenship and Caring for our Community,  11-19-2020 is when they are running this news cast!    Michael is receiving a Plaque for his Outstanding Community Service and receiving a $100 donation to VCR. Thank you Paul Giorgio of NEWS 6!

You can see some of the deplorable conditions that the vaults are in at the Shady Oaks Cemetery, vaults have deteriorated over years of neglected and abuse.  A majority of the headstones are hand made out of concrete and are hand written by loved ones using the fingers or sticks to write into the drying concrete, or others used store bought tin letters and numbers which the attached with nails or screws into the wet concrete, many are blank from the erosion of the hand formed concrete

others plates or plaques are missing and long lost, at least thirty plus graves have nothing for us to read to know who they are and to know if they are a veteran or not.  The conditions are deplorable at least and we are finding more vaults that are buried under dirt and brush each time we visit Shady Oaks!  We hope with our second clean up tomorrow March 2nd, that we will find every grave site!!  Our Clean-Up was HUGE!! Sixty Eight Incredible Volunteers!!! We could not have done half of what we accomplished if in not for the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps!!! Massive SHOUT OUT TO YOU ALL FOR YOUR OUTSTANDING DEDICATION & OUTSTANDING WORK!!
